How to resolve PSQL server closed the connection unexpectedly?
Today, let us see the causes and resolution provided by our Support techs.
- Look into the PostgreSQL server log.
Either you’ll find a crash report there, which would explain the broken connection, or there is something in your network that cuts connections with no activity after a while.
Investigate your firewalls!
Try to set the configuration parameter tcp_keepalives_idle
to a value shorter than the time when the connection is cut.
That will cause the server operating system to send keepalive messages on idle connections, which may enough to prevent the overzealous connection reaper in your environment from disrupting your work.
- This error can also cause if PostgreSQL server is on another machine and is not listening on external interfaces:When the postgres service is not configured to listen on the address from which you are attempting your client connection.
This may the case if you can connect to the service from some hosts, but receive this error message from others.
If you are able to connect to the service from another host, inspect the running configuration value of listen_addresses
.
show listen_addresses;
select *
from pg_settings
where name = 'listen_addresses';
To debug this problem, you can follow theses steps:
- Firstly, look at your postgresql.conf,
sudo vim /etc/postgresql/9.3/main/postgresql.conf
- Add this line:
listen_addresses = '*'
- Then, restart the service
sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql restart
Note: using '*'
for listening addresses will listen on all interfaces. If you do '0.0.0.0'
then it’ll listen for all ipv4 and if you do '::'
then it’ll listen for all ipv6.
Note : a configuration value of *
will allow the service to listen on all addresses.
If you see another value (such as localhost
, a hostname, or an IP address), then you may wish to add a record. You can do so by adding a comma and then your addresses to the listen_addresses
line of postgresql.conf and restarting the service.
Note that if you add an IP address it cannot be a CIDR range
