Cloudflare GRE Tunnel Configuration: How to?

by | May 3, 2023

Let us learn how to do the cloudflare GRE tunnel configuration with the support of our Server management support services at Bobcares.

What is Cloudflare GRE tunnel?

cloudflare gre tunnel configuration

Cloudflare provides a feature called “GRE Tunneling”. This enables us to construct a safe and encrypted tunnel between our network and the Cloudflare network.

The protocol called Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) wraps packets in a standardized manner, allowing various network protocols to transport them.

GRE, or Generic Routing Encapsulation, is a mechanism for encapsulating data packets from one routing protocol inside packets from another. “Encapsulating” involves enclosing one data packet within another, similar to placing one box inside another.

GRE is one method for establishing a direct point-to-point connection across a network in order to facilitate connections across various networks. It is compatible with a wide range of network layer protocols.

GRE enables the usage of protocols that are not typically supported by a network, by wrapping the packets within other packets that use supported protocols.

Cloudflare GRE Tunnel Configuration

“Tunneling” is the process of encapsulating packets within other packets. Usually, two routers establish GRE tunnels with each router serving as one end of the tunnel.

The configuration of the routers allows them to directly send and receive GRE packets. Any routers between those two will not open the encapsulated packets; instead, they will refer to the headers surrounding the encapsulated packets to forward them.

Setup

The following steps to configure a Cloudflare GRE tunnel:

  1. Firstly, In the Cloudflare dashboard, create a new GRE Tunnel:

To construct a GRE Tunnel, go into the Cloudflare dashboard and browse to the “Network” page.

Select “GRE Tunnels” and then click the “Create GRE Tunnel” button. Provide tunnel information, such as the local IP address and the distant Cloudflare IP address.

  2. After that, Configure the server to utilize the GRE Tunnel:

After building the GRE Tunnel in the Cloudflare dashboard, we need to configure the server to use it.

This usually entails installing a new network interface on the server. And also setting up it to use the IP address we gave in the Cloudflare dashboard.

  3. Configure routing for the GRE Tunnel:

After setting up the server to use the GRE Tunnel, we need to configure routing to ensure appropriate routing of the traffic via the tunnel.

Configuring routing tables or firewall rules to guarantee that traffic destined for the Cloudflare network is routed through the GRE Tunnel is standard.

  4. Finally, test the GRE Tunnel:

After completing the configuration stages, we should test the GRE Tunnel to check that it is operational.

Sending test traffic over the tunnel and verifying that it is properly encrypted and transferred to the Cloudflare network may require involvement.
