Ubuntu Not Found In EFIBOOTMGR | Fixed

by | Aug 25, 2023

When the EFI boot manager (efibootmgr) does not include Ubuntu as a boot option on a UEFI-based system, the error “Ubuntu not found in efibootmgr” usually points to the problem. As part of our Server Management Service, Bobcares provides answers to all of your questions.

Fixing the error “Ubuntu not found in efibootmgr”

When the EFI boot manager (efibootmgr) on a UEFI-based system does not show Ubuntu as a boot option, the error “Ubuntu not found in efibootmgr” usually relates to the problem. The contemporary BIOS successor known as UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) is used to initialize hardware and control the boot process.

The bootloader, which is often GRUB for Ubuntu, makes an entry in the EFI boot manager when we install an operating system like Ubuntu on a UEFI-enabled device. This entry enables us to select the operating system we want the computer to boot into when we turn it on. The location of the bootloader on the storage drive is described in this entry.

If we get the notice “Ubuntu not found in efibootmgr,” it means that either the EFI boot entry was improperly produced during the installation of Ubuntu, or it was created but was somehow corrupted or removed.

Steps to fix the error

1. Examine the UEFI/BIOS settings: Ensure that the UEFI/BIOS settings on the machine are set to boot in UEFI mode rather than Legacy/CSM mode. Because the EFI boot manager only functions in UEFI mode, this is crucial.

2. Replacing GRUB: The bootloader (GRUB) may occasionally not be installed properly. We can reinstall GRUB after entering Ubuntu using a live USB or CD.

3. EFI Boot Entry Update: Using the efibootmgr command, we can also attempt manually adding the Ubuntu entry to the EFI boot manager.

4. Examine the EFI Partition: Make sure that the storage drive’s EFI partition is correctly mounted. The required bootloader files should be located in a folder called “ubuntu” on the EFI disk.

5. Examine Secure Boot: If Secure Boot is enabled on the computer, it might stop unsigned bootloaders from being installed. In the UEFI settings, so, try turning Secure Boot off.

6. A UEFI/BIOS update: Make sure the UEFI/BIOS on the system is up to date. Updates can occasionally fix compatibility problems and enhance the EFI boot manager’s performance.
