Simple Steps to List Remote Images in LXC

by | May 16, 2024

Read the article to know more about listing remote images on LXC. As part of our Server Management Support, we assist our customers with several LXC queries.

How to List Remote Images on LXC?

Remote images are container and VM images saved on remote servers rather than the local system in LXD. These remote images can be used to build new containers or VMs without first downloading them to a local server. This set up is highly useful when creating and deploying consistent environments across multiple devices.

Remote images on LXC make container deployment easier and faster. We get them from a central source rather than creating them from scratch. They are normally maintained and updated on a regular basis, which ensures consistency and security. Furthermore, we may simply track versions and obtain community help.

We can use the following code to see all configured remotes on the system. This will show names for each remote server.

lxc list remote images

How it Works?

1. The lxc remote list command returns a list of setup remote image servers. These servers offer pre-built container images.

2. When we have the remote name, run the following command to list the pictures available on that server.

lxc list remote images

Change with the remote server name we got in Step 1.

3. This command obtains details on the remote server’s images, including: Image name, Version number, Architecture. Additional details may be presented based on the server settings.

An often use case for remote images is a company that runs a private LXD server with custom images. Developers and admins can set up their local LXD instances to use this private server as a remote. This ensure that containers and VMs are always deployed with the most recent approved image.
