How to add Deadline Azure DevOps TFS

Did you know we can use work items and their associated fields, like the “Due Date” field, to manage and track project deadlines In Azure DevOps?

Although there is no “Add Deadline” feature, we can set deadlines for work items with these steps:

1. To begin with, we have to create or open a work item that we want to associate with a deadline.
2. Then, head to the work item form and set the “Due Date” field to the date when the task or item is expected to be completed. This field lets us mention the deadline for that particular work item.
3. Now, we have to save the work item. This date will now be associated with the work item, and it can be used to track the deadline.
4. Furthermore, we can use the different features in Azure DevOps to track deadlines and visualize the work items with due dates. Here are a few ways to do it:
   • Queries:

     We can create queries to filter and display work items that have due dates approaching or overdue. This lets us monitor the status of work items with deadlines.
   • Boards:

     If we are using the Azure Boards feature, we can use boards to visualize work items. Additionally, we can customize boards to show columns like “Due Date” to visually track deadlines.
   • Backlogs and Sprints:

     In case we use Agile planning tools, we can also track deadlines in backlogs and sprints.
   • Notifications:

     We can set up notifications to receive alerts when work items are approaching their due dates or are overdue.

Furthermore, if we need an additional field defining a deadline, we can easily edit our Process and create a new field. Its type should be Date/Times.

Then head to Process under Organization Settings, click edit a work item, and choose New field. We can reuse this field for other work items as needed.
