How to check if the bucket exists using AWS CLI?

We can use the aws s3api head-bucket command to see if an Amazon S3 bucket exists using the AWS Command Line Interface (CLI). This command sends a “HEAD” request to the given S3 bucket and checks to see if it exists and is accessible.

The syntax of the code is as follows:

aws cli check if bucket exists

We must replace BUCKET_NAME with the name of the S3 bucket to be checked. Also, the S3 bucket names are globally unique across all AWS accounts, therefore use the right bucket name. The command will return a success message if the bucket exists and is accessible.

Otherwise, if the bucket does not exist or we do not have the necessary permissions, the command will return an error message.

It’s worth noting that the aws s3api head-bucket code does not require us to explicitly enter any AWS credentials. The AWS CLI configuration or environment credentials are automatically used by the CLI. However, we must ensure that the AWS CLI configuration has the required rights to access the S3 bucket.

We may also use scripting languages like Bash, Python, or PowerShell to analyze the output of the aws s3api head-bucket command and take appropriate steps based on the result if we want to automate the process of checking if a bucket exists and handling the results programmatically.
