AWS EC2 R5

They are the next generation of memory-optimized instances for the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. Applications that require a lot of memory, like high-performance databases, distributed web scale in-memory caches, mid-size in-memory databases, real-time big data analytics, and other corporate applications, are well suited for R5 instances. Furthermore, we have a choice of instances with local NVMe storage, EBS optimised storage (up to 60 Gbps), and networking options (up to 100 Gbps).

R5 instances deliver 5% additional memory per vCPU than R4 and the largest size provides 768 GiB of memory. In addition, R5 instances deliver a 10% price per GiB improvement and a ~20% increased CPU performance over R4. With R5d instances, local NVMe-based SSDs are physically connected to the host server and provide block-level storage that is coupled to the lifetime of the R5 instance.

The first memory-optimized instances on EC2’s new Nitro system are the R5 instances. They completely do away with virtualization overhead to provide the greatest user experience. Applications may grow up on fewer instances because of the 768 GiB of memory provided by the biggest size R5 instance. Instances running on R5 also support the new AVX-512 instructions and offer a 20% boost in CPU performance over R4 instances.

Additionally, EBS-optimized burst support for R5 instances enables higher peak throughput for smaller capacities (up to 3.5Gbps). So customers can use this to cut expenses by correctly scaling instances based on their memory and compute needs. However, they still get the EBS throughput they require.

Features Of AWS EC2 R5

  1. Multiple Processor Choices
  2. High performance networking
  3. High Performance Amazon EBS Storage
  4. High Performance Instance Storage
  5. Built on AWS Nitro System

Benefits Of AWS EC2 R5

The major benefits include:

  1. Flexibility and Choice: There are 60 different instance choices with options for processors (Intel Xeon Scalable processor or AMD EPYC processor), instance storage (NVMe SSD), EBS volumes storage (up to 60 Gbps), networking (up to 100 Gbps), and instance sizes to optimize both cost and performance for the workload needs.
  2. Memory Availability: R5 instances support the high memory requirements of certain applications to increase performance and reduce latency. R5 instances deliver additional memory per vCPU and the largest size, r5.24xlarge, provides 768 GiB of memory, allowing customers to scale-up and consolidate their workloads on a fewer number of instances.
  3. Maximize resource efficiency: R5 instances are powered by the AWS Nitro System, a combination of dedicated hardware and lightweight hypervisor, which delivers practically all of the compute and memory resources of the host hardware to the user’s instances. This frees up additional memory for the workloads which boosts performance and lowers the $/GiB costs.
