AWS Elasticache Redis Persistence

Redis is known for its lightning-fast performance and versatility. It becomes even more powerful when we implement strategies for data persistence.

AWS Elasticache Redis Persistence

Today, we are going to take a look at two primary methods:

  • Regular Database Snapshots (RDB)
  • Append-Only Files (AOF)

These methods ensure our Redis data stays intact across restarts. Additionally, we will also take a look at enabling persistence in AWS ElastiCache for Redis.

Regular Database Snapshots (RDB) – A Step-by-Step Configuration

  1. To begin with, head to the redis.conf file and set up save points for regular snapshots based on time intervals and key changes.

    # after 600 sec (10 min) if at least 1 key changed
    save 600 1
    # after 300 sec (5 min) if at least 10 keys changed
    save 300 10
    # after 60 sec if at least 10000 keys changed
    save 60 10000

  2. Then, it is time to apply the changes by restarting the Redis server.
  3. After that, we have to check our configuration with this command and inspect lines starting with rdb:

    info persistence

Append-Only Files (AOF) – Balancing Safety and Performance

We can enable AOF for persistence with Redis with these steps:

To begin with, modify redis.conf and set the appendonly option to 'yes'. Additionally we have to choose an appendfsync option based on our data safety requirements.

appendonly yes
appendfsync everysec

  1. Then, apply the configuration changes by restarting the Redis server.
  2. Now, we have to check our configuration with this command and inspect lines starting with aof:

    info persistence

Furthermore, we can combine both RDB and AOF methods for a better data safety approach. In fact, Redis documentation recommends using both persistence methods.

Redis Persistence in AWS ElastiCache

Amazon ElastiCache for Redis supports persistence through snapshots as seen here:

  1. First, head to the ElastiCache cluster in the AWS Management Console.
  2. Then, go to the “Configuration” tab.
  3. After that, enable “Snapshot and Log Backup.”

Alternatively, we can use the AWS CLI to modify our Redis cluster’s configuration with parameters like snapshot-retention-limit, snapshot-window, appendonly, etc.

aws elasticache modify-replication-group --replication-group-id your-redis-cluster-id \
--snapshot-retention-limit 5 \
--snapshot-window "02:00-06:00" \
--append-only
