Freeable Memory in AWS Redis

Redis is an in-memory key-value store by Amazon ElastiCache, a managed caching solution within Amazon Web Services (AWS). One metric we may come across when keeping an eye on an Amazon ElastiCache Redis instance is “Freeable Memory.”

The quantity of memory on the Redis cluster that may be recovered or freed up without affecting system performance is referred to as freeable memory. It is a representation of memory that is not in use by data at the moment but can later use for other system activities or to cache more data.

Why Is It Important?

To discover how much memory the Redis instance is using, we must look at the Freeable Memory statistic. To handle future data expansion and preserve peak performance, a healthy system should have a respectable quantity of freeable memory.

Sustaining optimal performance requires a sufficient amount of freeable memory. As the system gets closer to its memory constraints, a low amount of freeable memory might result in higher latency and possible performance issues.

How To Check It?

We can run the following steps:

1. Open the AWS Management Console and log in.

2. Expand the “Services” menu and choose “ElastiCache.”

3. Choose “Redis” on the ElastiCache dashboard’s left navigation pane.

4. Select the Redis cluster that we wish to monitor and set Freeable Memory for.

5. To view CloudWatch metrics, select the “Monitoring” tab.

6. Find the “FreeableMemory” indicator in the CloudWatch metrics. This measure illustrates how much memory may be released without compromising performance.

Conclusion

We can also set up CloudWatch Alarms to get alerts when Freeable Memory drops below a specific amount.
