Let’s take a closer look at configuring the route between subnets in AWS. Bobcares, as part of our AWS Support Services, handles your AWS-related issues.

Route Between Subnets In AWS

A VPC router is present in each AWS VPC. This VPC router’s main job is to take all of the route tables configured within that VPC and then, using the rules specified in those tables, control traffic flow both within and to subnets outside of the VPC. Each VPC by default has one route table that is already set up with a “local” route.

The “local” route is only applicable to the subnet that has been configured for the entire VPC. This enables seamless communication between all resources generated within the VPC without the need for extra configuration. We can’t also remove the “local” route from the routing table. It always appears by default when a new route table is made inside a VPC.

How To Configure The Route Between Subnets In AWS?

  1. A single route table for the entire VPC: This can be used in straightforward systems with no more complex routing rules, such as those with only public subnets that are all pointing to the same VPC internet gateway. There is just one route table, which is located in the VPC. It is connected to each subnet.
  2. 1 route table per subnet: In this case, each subnet in the VPC is assigned a single route table. There is a 1:1 link between route tables and subnets. When it comes time to make a routing change across the environment, using this strategy results in extra administration overhead and increases the number of modifications required. Usually, this is employed in more intricate routing settings.
  3. 2-tier routing tables (1 for public subnets, and 1 for private subnets): It is excellent practice to have one route table for public subnets and one route table for private subnets in environments that are divided into public and private subnets.
