About Azure Kubernetes VMSS
The Azure cloud provider is an implementation of the Kubernetes cloud provider interface that allows us to manage Kubernetes clusters running on Azure. It includes support for features like load balancing, auto-scaling, and so on.
Furthermore, with the Azure cloud provider, we can create and manage Kubernetes clusters on Azure with the same tools and APIs that we would use for clusters running on other cloud providers or on-premises.
As a cloud provider, Azure provides a number of services and features that make it easy to deploy and manage virtual machines. One of these features is VMSS.
Azure Kubernetes Virtual Machine Scale Sets or VMSS is a feature in Azure that allows us to easily deploy as well as manage a set of identical, auto-scaling virtual machines. With VMSS, we can create a cluster of virtual machines that automatically scales up or down in response to changes in workload and other factors.
This can help us save time and money by ensuring that our applications have the right amount of computing resources at all times.
In order to use VMSS, we have to create a Kubernetes cluster in Azure. This is done via the Azure portal, Azure CLI, or other tools. After creating the cluster, we can use VMSS to deploy and manage a set of identical virtual machines that are part of the cluster.
In addition to scaling, VMSS also provides other features and benefits, like high availability, automatic updates, and built-in monitoring and logging. These help us save time and effort when deploying and managing our applications in Azure.
The load balancer interface offers access to the underlying cloud provider load balancer service. Kubernetes requires information about the load balancers and control operations in order to handle the services that are to be hosted on the Kubernetes cluster. In order to have VMSS support, we have to ensure that the VMSS instances are part of the load balancer pool.
These instances interfaces offer the cloud controller access to the node’s details from the cloud provider layer. For instance, the node’s IP address, the instance id, etc. In addition, for VMSS support we have to talk to VMSS service for information about the instances.
How to set up a VMSS cluster on Azure
We can easily set up a VMSS cluster on Azure, with these steps:
- First, sign in to the Azure portal and create a new Kubernetes cluster via the Azure Kubernetes Service.
- Next, navigate to the VMSS page in the Azure portal and click “Create”.
- After that, click the Kubernetes cluster we want to use on the VMSS creation page. Then, enter a name and other settings for the VMSS cluster.
- Then, select the size and number of virtual machines that we require in the VMSS cluster. We also have to choose the required scaling settings.
- Finally, click “Create” to create the VMSS cluster.
After we create the VMSS cluster, we can deploy and manage your applications. You can also use the Azure portal to monitor and manage your VMSS cluster.
