Elastic Beanstalk Auto Scaling Triggers | How to Configure

In the dynamic world of cloud computing, adapting to fluctuating workloads is important.

Elastic Beanstalk Auto Scaling Triggers

AWS Elastic Beanstalk is a fully managed service for deploying and running applications. It offers a feature known as auto-scaling triggers. These triggers let us define conditions under which our environment automatically scales. This leads to optimal performance without manual intervention.

Today, we are going to look at configuring auto-scaling triggers in AWS Elastic Beanstalk.

  1. First, open the Elastic Beanstalk console and then select the AWS Region from the Regions list.
  2. Next, select Environments in the navigation pane and then choose the name of the environment from the list. We can also use the search bar for quicker access.
  3. Then, select Edit in the Capacity configuration category, and choose “Edit.”
  4. Now, head to the Scaling triggers section and fine-tune the following settings based on our application’s needs:
    • Metric: Define the metric that will serve as the basis for your Auto Scaling trigger.
    • Statistic: Specify the statistic calculation the trigger should use, such as Average.
    • Unit: Indicate the unit for the trigger metric, like Bytes.
    • Period: Set how frequently Amazon CloudWatch measures the metrics for your trigger.
    • Breach duration: Determine the duration, in minutes, a metric can deviate outside upper and lower thresholds before triggering a scaling operation.
    • Upper threshold: If the metric exceeds this value for the breach duration, initiate a scaling operation.
    • Scale-up increment: Specify the number of Amazon EC2 instances to add during a scaling activity.
    • Lower threshold: If the metric falls below this value for the breach duration, trigger a scaling operation.
    • Scale down increment: Determine the number of Amazon EC2 instances to remove during a scaling activity.
  5. Now, we can finalize our changes by clicking “Apply” at the bottom of the page.
