by | Apr 29, 2023

Let us learn how to perform the Linode manual backup with the support of our Linode support services at Bobcares.

How to create a manual backup of Linode?

Linode manual backup

Manual backup entails copying the file to a separate backup folder. In contrast, restoring implies copying the file from the backup folder to its original position.

It should be noted that in some circumstances, we must consider file dependencies. We need to backup a collection of interconnected files as a whole.

We can create a manual backup of the Linode by following these steps:

  1. Sign in to the Linode account.
  2. Go to the Linodes tab and pick the Linode for which we wish to generate a backup.
  3. Select the “Create a Backup” option.
  4. Give your backup a label. This label will assist us in later identifying thre backup.
  5. Select the backup schedule. We can choose to backup the Linode daily, weekly, or monthly.
  6. Choose a backup window. This is the time when the backup will be taken. We can choose to have the backup taken immediately or at a specific time.
  7. Click on the “Create Backup” button to start the backup process.
  8. Wait for the backup process to complete. The time it takes to create a backup will depend on the size of the Linode.
  9. Once the backup process is complete, we will receive a notification.
  10. To view the backup, navigate to the “Backups” tab. Here you can see all your backups along with the label, date and time, and size of each backup.

Manual Linode Backup via Rsync:

To create a manual backup of the Linode, follow these steps:

  1. Enter the following command to install rsync on your Linode and backup_server:

    sudo apt-get install rsync

  2. Execute the following command from the backup_server or personal_computer: rsync

    rsync -ahvz user@production_server:/path/to/source/content /path/to/local/backup/storage/

  3. When asked, provide the SSH password for the production_server. As the files are copied, we will be able to see them listed. At the conclusion, we should receive a message similar to this:

    sent 100 bytes  received 2.76K bytes  1.90K bytes/sec
total size is 20.73K  speedup is 7.26
