Linode Windows VM | Step-by-Step Guide

Although Linode is a great option as an affordable and reliable hosting provider, there are a few limitations when we want to use it on Windows.

Linode Windows VM | Step-by-Step GuideFurthermore, if we want to use Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016, we will run into trouble. Linode does not officially support these Windows versions.

Fortunately, our experts have come up with a workaround.

The Workaround: Third-Party Virtualization Solutions

In order to run Windows on Linode, we have to use third-party virtualization solutions like VMware or Hyper-V. Before we begin, we need the following:

  • A Linode account
  • The Windows disk image for our VPS

Then, it is time to follow these steps:

  1. First, we have to create a Linode of our desired size and in the region of our choice.
  2. Then, we have to turn off the virtual machine and delete the two partitions on the disk.
  3. After that, we must create a new disk. Remember to choose the maximum available space and choose “raw” as the disk type.
  4. Next, we have to delete the old startup configuration and use the configuration settings.
  5. Now, it is time to start the VPS in Recovery mode and then launch the LISH console.
  6. Our experts recommend setting a root password with the passwd command and starting the SSH service with service start SSH.
  7. Then, we have to connect to the server via an SSH connection.
  8. After that, we have to run the command to install our chosen Windows version and language.
  9. Then, restart the server.

After the above steps, Windows will be installed on our Linode VPS successfully.
