MikroTik on Vultr Setup
Deploying MikroTik CHR (Cloud Hosted Router) on Vultr offers a flexible and powerful solution for networking needs.
Today, we are going to take a look at how to deploy MikroTik CHR on a Vultr server while making sure security measures are in place.
1: Deploy a Server in Rescue Mode
- First, deploy a new Cloud Compute instance on Vultr.
- Then, select the location with optimal performance via Vultr’s network-looking glass.
- Next., choose the ISO Library tab, and then select SystemRescue x64 as the bootable Linux ISO.
- Now, it is time to configure the server size with sufficient bandwidth.
- At this point, enter a hostname and label, then click Deploy Now.
- Once deployment is complete, proceed to the next step.
2: Write the CHR Image to the Disk
- First, head to the MikroTik download page in a web browser.
- Then, locate the latest Stable RAW CHR disk image.
- Next, right-click the floppy disk icon to copy the download URL.
- At this point, we have to access the server’s information page on the Vultr portal and connect to the web console.
- Now, we can download the CHR image to the server with the `wget` command.
- Then, unzip the downloaded file and write the MikroTik CHR image to the server’s disk with the `dd` command.
3: Connect to MikroTik CHR
- To begin with, head to the server’s settings page on Vultr.
- Then, go to the Custom ISO menu and click Remove ISO. This will push the server to reboot.
- Next, we have to connect to the web console and log in as an admin with no password.
- Now, view the software license and set a strong password.
- Then, close the web console and open a terminal on the local computer.
- At this point, we have to SSH as admin to the server’s IP address and enter the strong password.
- Now, create a new administrator account, remove the default “admin” user, and disable unnecessary services.
- Then, change the SSH port for added security.
- After that, reconnect to the server on the new port with the new credentials.
Security Measures after VM is Running
- To begin with, SSH into the admin user on the new VM, change the password and ensure no unauthorized access.
- Then, monitor SSH service for about 30-45 seconds after the VM shows “Running” before connecting.
Furthermore, we can boost SSH Security with these steps:
- Disable unnecessary services except SSH using `/ip service disable`.
- Change the SSH port to a custom value (e.g., 2299) using `/ip service set`.
- Set stronger cryptography and host key size for SSH using `/ip ssh set`.
- Regenerate the SSH host key and reboot the CHR.
By following these steps, we can deploy MikroTik CHR on Vultr with enhanced security measures.
