Getting Nagios host status down? We can help you fix it

Sometimes we get an alert for host down but on checking the server is responding to ping.

At Bobcares, we often get requests regarding Nagios as a part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s see how our Support Engineers fix Nagios host status down.

Causes for Nagios host status down

If the Nagios host server is down and not responding to ping then we need to check with the datacenter. In few cases the server is up and in Nagios the ping service shows down.

One of the major reasons for the error is that the check_ping plugin is incorrectly configured.

Another reason for the error is that if we are using an older version of Nagios.

Thus correcting the configuration or upgrading to the latest version will resolve the error. The sample looks like

How we fix Nagios host status down

Recently one of the customers contacted us saying that the host status is down. But the server is responding to ping. Let’s discuss how our Support Engineers resolve the error for our customers.

Upgrade Nagios to the latest version

A reason for the error is if the server is using an older version of Nagios. Thus upgrading the Nagios to the latest version will resolve the error.

First, our Support Engineers take the backup of the Nagios configuration files before proceeding with the upgrade.

Thus, we download the latest version of Nagios. Then we stop the Nagios and the HTTP service.

Then we install the latest Nagios and start the service back.

Once the upgrade is complete the host status was correctly reflected.

Check_ping service

One of the major reasons for this error to occur is when the check_ping plugin configuration is incorrect.

Thus, we analyze the check_ping plugin. Then we make the required changes in the plugin to correct the plugin.

Once we make the changes the Nagios host down alert was cleared.

Nagios Configuration incorrect

Another reason for the error is Nagios configuration in the host server is incorrect.

Thus, to resolve the error we analyze the Nagios configuration file. Then we make the necessary corrections in the configuration file.

Once we correct the configuration file the Nagios ping down alert gets cleared.
