How to Set Up DDNS on pfSense using Cloudflare?

Today we are going to take a look at how to set up DDNS on pfSense using Cloudflare. As it just tracks the external IP address of the home network, we can use the DDNS for a variety of home-lab applications.

If we have a static external IP address, DDNS will do nothing but allow us to connect a domain name to the external IP address.

However, if we have a dynamic IP address, DDNS will enable us to always connect to the external IP address. We can do all of this quickly by following the instructions below for configuring DDNS on pfSense with Cloudflare.

Instructions Set Up DDNS on pfSense using Cloudflare

Follow the steps given below to setup- up the pfSense Cloudflare Argo.

  1. Sign in to Cloudflare and navigate to DNS.

  2. Click Add Record and select Type A. We must enter how we want to access it in the Name section. Remember that this is the subdomain component, which is the extension preceding the domain name.

We can use whatever we want or the @ symbol, which will take us directly to the domain. Enter 1.1.1.1 in the IPv4 column and set the Proxy status to DNS Only, then Save.

  3. We now need the Global API Key to use as the password in pfSense, which can be found in Cloudflare’s API Tokens area. configure this for Setting up the pfSense Cloudflare Argo.

  4. Click View next to the Global API Key, then type in the password.

  5. The API Token will now open up. Then, go to pfSense and copy the Token.

  6. Under Services, select Dynamic DNS, then Add to add a new service.

  7. Change the Service Type to Cloudflare, then enter the subdomain and domain name in the Hostname area.

  8. Enter the Cloudflare login in the Username area, then enter the API Token that we obtained before. Finally, enter a description and click Save.

  9. In pfSense, the Cached IP address now displays the external IP address. Everything will work as planned as long as the status shows a green checkmark, and the domain name we choose will ALWAYS refer to the external IP address. THis completes the PfSense Cloudflare Argo process.

When we examine the IPv4 column in Cloudflare, it will update to the external IP address as well. We can use the DDNS for a variety of services, and running it in pfSense with Cloudflare is an excellent choice. It not only works properly but the home IP address may be hidden by using Cloudflare’s proxy.
