How to Port Forward in OPNsense

Port forwarding involves exposing a service on our local network to the outside world. Once the port is forwarded, a user outside the local network can navigate to a DDNS hostname, domain name, or external IP address. Furthermore, they can add the port number that was forwarded, and then access that service.

Some of the commonly forwarded ports include:

  • HTTP
  • HTTPS
  • VPN

Let’s take a look at the steps involved in forwarding a port in OPNsense:

  1. First, log in to OPNsense and click Port Forward under Firewall.
  2. Next, do not modify the default anti-lockout rule as it enables us to connect to the web administration portal. So, click the + symbol in order to create a new NAT rule.
  3. Then, choose the interface as WAN and select the corresponding protocol.
  4. After that, set Destination as WAN address and we can either choose from an existing item via the drop-down menu or enter a custom port as the Destination Port Range.
  5. Next, we must set the local IP address of the server where the port should be mapped in the Redirect Target IP section.

Remember to verify the Redirect Target Port is the same as the Destination Port Range that we entered earlier.

  6. Then, add a description for the rule and make sure that Filter Rule Association is set as Add Associated Filter Rule.
  7. Finally, it is time to Save the changes we have made in the previous steps.
