SMART_HOST in Sendmail

When a host detects mail that it cannot transport straight to the specified remote host, or if we are on a dial-up network, a smart host comes in quite helpful.

One host or mail server serving as the MTA is a good concept in big networks. When all other delivery techniques have failed, smart hosts are typically deployed. Regarding the private network organisation, it would make sense for the hosts to try delivering mail directly at first, and then forward it to the smart host in case it doesn’t work well. Because other hosts may send mail directly to other hosts on the private network, this reduces the amount of traffic that the smart host has to handle.

We can designate the host to which all outgoing mail that we are unable to send directly, as well as the mail transport protocol to communicate with it, using the SMART_HOST macro.

SMART_HOST in Sendmail: Setup Steps

1. Get the configuration file open:

sendmail smart_host

2. Add or change the macro that has the following text:

sendmail smart_host

Change the address of your real SMTPS server. If a dnl word appears in the line, eliminate the word.

3. Use the m4 command to regenerate a fresh sendmail.cf configuration file:

sendmail smart_host

4. Lastly, restart the Sendmail.
