What is Virtnetwork?

Virtnetwork can be described as a dummy virtual network interface. It is used for different purposes. For instance, it comes in handy for some network applications which need the network card to work, virtual loopback adapter, and so on.

Furthermore, we can use Virtnetwork with a virtual private network. A VPN service creates a secure network that extends a private network across a public network, like the Internet. In other words, it offers remote offices or users with secure access to the company network.

A virtual network adapter separates the data flows that have to be sent across the VPN tunnel and the data flows that should be sent from the local, physical network adapter.

Virtual network adapters can be created in one of three ways.

• The first method uses tools within the device OS to create a virtual adapter. For instance, Windows 10 has built-in functionality to create VPN virtual network adapters. A virtual network adapter for VPN purposes needs only some information like the connection name, the VPN head-end name or IP address, and so on.
• We can also use Windows Device Manager to manually configure virtual network adapters for different reasons.
• Alternatively, we can use a third-party application to create virtual adapters. These applications automatically build a virtual network adapter within the device OS on the user’s behalf. This comes in handy when the adapter serves a single purpose and does not require any special network configuration settings.

Finally, the administrator can configure virtual networks and virtual network adapters to enable the VMs to communicate outside their virtual instance.

The configuration is done via the hypervisor management interface during the VM setup processes. Additionally, additions, deletions, or changes can also be done using hypervisor management tools as needed.
