Virsh dumpxml command – Let’s discuss it in detail

by | Feb 4, 2020

Do you find the virsh dumpxml command confusing? We will help you to have a clear idea about it.

Usually, virsh commands help to manage Virtual Machines easily.

At Bobcares, we often receive requests to fix virsh errors as part of our Server Management Services.

Today, let’s have a deep look at virsh. And, we will also see how our Support Engineers use this command.

More about virsh

To be precise, Virsh is the interface for managing virsh domains.

And, virsh commands can create, pause, restart and shutdown domains. Also, it can list the domains available in the Virtualization platform.

But, to run virsh commands, we need root privileges. Otherwise, it will end up throwing errors.

So today, let’s discuss the dumpxml command in detail.

How we use the virsh dumpxml command?

The virsh dumpxml command returns the XML configuration file of the virtual machine.

So, we can save, use or change the file as per our requirement. And, this XML configuration file can recreate the guest.

Having a decade of experience in managing servers, our Dedicated Engineers are familiar with the virsh commands.

Recently, one of our customers approached us with a query. He wanted to retrieve the XML configuration of his Virtual Machine.

Our Support Engineers helped him with his requirements. We used the below command to get the XML configuration.

virsh dumpxml VM1 > VM1.xml

And, on executing this command, it will pipe the output to VM1.xml. We can then view this XML file as below to get the configurations.

virsh dumpxml command

Also, we can recreate the guest virtual machine from this file using the below command.

virsh create VM1.xml

Also, we can edit this XML configuration file to include additional guests and devices. And, we use the virsh edit command for that purpose.
