How to troubleshoot Google Cloud SQL Access denied for user Error

Before going into the steps for fixing this error we will see what causes this error.

A typical error looks like the one given below:

[MySQL][ODBC 5.3(w) Driver]Access denied for user ”@ (using password: YES) Invalid username or password.

Causes:

Following are some of the causes for this error:

1. This can happen if the username (or password) is incorrect.

2. It can also occur when the user is connecting from an incorrect URL

3. When the user doesn’t have the correct privileges for the database they are trying to connect to.

5. The database password contains special characters.

6. SSL is required by the Google Cloud SQL instance, but SSL is not configured for the connection in Tableau Desktop.

Steps to troubleshoot this error

Following are the troubleshooting steps used by our Support Engineers:

1. Firstly we have to verify the username and corresponding password.

2. Then we have to check the origin of the connection to see if it matches the URL where the user has access privileges.

3. Furthermore, we can check the user’s grant privileges in the database.

4. After that we must ensure that the database password does not contain any of the following special characters:

[] {}() , ; ? * ! @.

5. Next, we can try connecting to Google Cloud SQL from MySQL Workbench using the same server name and credentials.

In case, if we are unable to connect using MySQL Workbench, we must verify whether the password is correct.

6. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, we can try using the Other Databases (ODBC) connector in Tableau Desktop with the MySQL driver.

The steps to use Other Databases(ODBC) are given below:

a) Firstly, from the ODBC connector dialog box we must select the MySQL ODBC Unicode driver.

b) Then we must click Connect and enter the connection details.

c) And then click on Details and select the SSL tab.

d) After that we must select the client-key.pem, client-cert.pem and server-ca.pem files respectively.

e) Finally we can click OK.
