How to fix the Grub Rescue error in Centos systems?
Due to some human error or some patching activity, we may see the ‘Grub Rescue’ prompt. It is a common boot failure issue. The reasons behind the issue include:
- When the bootloader of another OS has overwritten the GRUB boot configuration
- Accidental deletion of GRUB configuration files
Here, we’ll fix Linux boot failure using the GRUB Rescue prompt.
Steps to fix Grub Rescue error
1. On the Grub Terminal, we can use the set command with no arguments to view the environment variables:
set
2. We can use the below command to display the available partitions on the disk:
ls
3. Then we use the below command to find the partition containing the boot directory:
ls [partition-name]
4. Set the boot partition as the root variable’s value. E.g.,
set root=(hd0,msdos1) //(hd0,msdos1) is the partition.
5. Then launch the default boot mode:
insmod normal
6. Start the normal boot mode now:
normal
7. Now with the Linux command given below, load the Linux kernel:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-4.2.0-16-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro
8. Lastly, use the boot command.
boot
Now the system successfully boots. After that, we must make sure the GRUB config file is up-to-date. We can use the below command to confirm the version.
update-grub
