How to upload ISO via command line in Proxmox

Proxmox is an open-source virtualization platform that enables users to create and manage VMs on a single physical server. A key feature of Proxmox is its ability to upload ISO images. These images are used to install operating systems as well as other software on virtual machines. How to upload ISO via command line in Proxmox

According to our experts, we can upload an ISO image to Proxmox via the web interface, of the command line.

Steps to upload ISO via command line in Proxmox

Let’s take a quick look at how to upload an ISO image to the Proxmox server via the command line:

  1. To begin with, we have to connect to the Proxmox server via SSH.
  2. Then, we must head to the directory where we plan to upload the ISO image. According to our experts, this is usually a directory on the local file system of on a network share.
  3. After that, we will use the scp command as seen below to transfer the ISO image to the Proxmox server:

    scp /path/to/iso-image.iso user@proxmox-server:/path/to/destination/

Here, /path/to/iso-image.iso has to be replaced with the local path to the ISO image file, user with the username on the Proxmox server and proxmox-server the IP address of the hostname of the Proxmox server. The /path/to/destination/  has to be replaced with the destination directory on the Proxomox server where we plan to store the ISO image.

  4. After the file transfer, we can verify the ISP image is available in the Proxmox web interface by heading to Datacenter and choosing the storage location where we uploaded the ISO image. If the above steps were successful, we will be able to see the ISO file among the list of available images.

Alternatively, we can connect via SSH to the server. Then, switch to the directory where Proxmox stores ISO images and then use the wget command as seen below:

cd /var/lib/vz/vz/template/iso
wget [iso_url]

Furthermore, using the command line to upload ISO images enables us to automate the process of deploying new VMs or updating existing ones.
