Windows Error Code 0x80072f8f – 0x20000

Many of our customers have found themselves facing Error code 0x80072f8f – 0x20000 when trying to upgrade their Windows OS.

The error usually pops up because of a lack of support for two vital security protocols called TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2. These protocols ensure secure communication between our computer and Microsoft’s servers during the upgrade process.

Interestingly, this is a common issue among Windows users. If you are one of the unlucky few, we have your back. Fortunately, our experts have put together three solutions to help you out.

Solution 1: Enable TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2

The first solution involves enabling TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2. But before we begin, remember to take a backup of the registry.

  1. First, enter regedit.exe in the search box that pops up when we click the Start button.
  2. Then, click on File in the top-left corner and select Export in the Registry Editor.
  3. Now, we have to head to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.1\Client.
  4. Next, head to the right side of the window and right-click the empty field. Then, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it “DisabledByDefault.”
  5. At this point, we have to double-click the new DWORD and set its value to 0.
  6. After that, head to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client (create these keys if they don’t exist).
  7. Then, it is time to create a new DWORD, name it “DisabledByDefault” and set its value to 0.
  8. Finally, we have to restart our computer and run the Media Creation Tool again.

Solution 2: Delete the Software Distribution Folder

  1. First, we have to open file explorer and head to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download.
  2. Then, we must select all files and subfolders within the folder and delete them.
  3. After that, we must launch the Command Prompt and enter the command:

    wuauclt.exe /updatenow

Then, hit Enter and try running the setup again.

Solution 3: Perform a Clean Boot

  1. First, open the Start menu and search for “msconfig.”
  2. Then, click System Configuration in the search results.
  3. Now, go to the Services tab in the System Configuration dialog.
  4. Then, check the “Hide all Microsoft services” box and click on Disable All.
  5. Now, we have to switch to the Startup tab and disable each enabled program.
  6. After that, we have to click OK and restart your computer.
