- Port aggregation creates a logical bond interface that groups two or more physical NICs together into a single virtual network interface. Furthermore, this bond interface presents itself to the OS and VMs as a single network interface with aggregated bandwidth. Here are the different bond modes:
- Load Balancing:
This mode distributes network traffic across the bonded NICs. It requires network switch support for Link Aggregation Control Protocol.
- Active-Backup (Failover):
Here, one NIC is active, while the others are on standby. If the active NIC fails, one of the standby NICs takes over.
- Round Robin:
Traffic is distributed sequentially across the bonded NICs in this mode. This helps balance the load without requiring LACP support.
- Broadcast:
Here, traffic is sent to all NICs in this mode. This works when all NICs have to receive the same traffic.

How to Configure Port Aggregation in Proxmox VE
- First, open the Proxmox web interface and head to the Datacenter or Cluster section.
- Then, choose the Proxmox host for which we want to configure port aggregation.
- Furthermore, head to Network or Network Configuration section and create a bond interface.
- Now, we have to mention the bond mode and add the physical NICs to the bond.
- Then, configure IP settings and other network parameters for the bond interface.
- Additionally, we have to assign the bond interface to our VMs or containers.
