by | Nov 23, 2023

This post offers steps to set up Shadowsocks on a Vultr VPS. At Bobcares, with our Vultr Managed Service, we can handle your issues.

Steps to Set Up Shadowsocks on a Vultr VPS

We must follow the below steps in order to set up the Shadowsocks on Vultr VPS:

1. Initially, register for a Vultr account.

2. After logging in, select the “Deploy” tab from within the Vultr account.

3. Then, choose a server plan that works and the desired server location.

4. Choose an OS for the server. We can also select a Linux distribution in this situation, such as Ubuntu, Debian, or CentOS.

5. After selecting a server hostname or label, press the “Deploy Now” button.

6. Also, watch for the VPS to be provisioned and deployed by Vultr. An email containing the IP address, username, and password for the server will be sent to the user.

7. Using an SSH client such as Terminal (macOS/Linux) or PuTTY (Windows), we can access the VPS. Also, make use of the Vultr-provided IP address.

8. Enter the username and password that Vultr sent us to log in.

9. Run the following command in order to update the package lists after logging into the VPS:

vultr vps shadowsocks

10. In order to install Shadowsocks-libev, run the subsequent command:

vultr vps shadowsocks

11. In a text editor, create a new setup file. Also, enter the following setup in the editor:

vultr vps shadowsocks

Substitute the VPS’s IP address for your_server_ip. Select a strong password, and if we’d like, also change the encryption technique.

12. After saving the file, close the text editor.

13. Use the following command to launch the Shadowsocks service:

vultr vps shadowsocks

14. Then, give the service permission to launch at system boot:

vultr vps shadowsocks

15. If the firewall is enabled, use the correct command, depending on the firewall setup, in order to allow incoming connections to the Shadowsocks port (default: 8388).

16. Lastly, make sure Shadowsocks is operating error-free by looking at the service status:

vultr vps shadowsocks

An “active (running)” message will appear if it’s up and running. We’ll need a client app to create a connection to the Shadowsocks server. Install a client that works.

Enter the server IP, port, password, and encryption method listed in the Shadowsocks server setup in the client app. Use the client app to create a connection with the Shadowsocks server.
