Agentless backup: It was developed to keep the benefits of agent-based backup while avoiding the cost of per-server agents. Rather than deploying a backup agent on each VM, backup intelligence is located centrally and conducts disk-to-disk backup from a single point of control. The main benefits include:

• Reduced cost: There are fewer components to acquire and license, fewer communications to perform, and lower CPU and bandwidth use without an individual agent on every VM in the network. This will result in low cost compared to agent-based backup.
• Easy management: The centralized approach of the agentless backup allows control of all VMs from a single location. The backup administrator specifies network computers and data for backup, and the network-based agent transfers the specified data. Restores are similarly simple.
• Better Control: Agentless backup lends itself to policy-based control, allowing admins to maintain greater control over backup and recovery activities while investing less time.
• Flexibility: It supports all OS, DBs, and email formats in use today.
• Business continuity: Snapshot technology, which creates a complete copy of a virtualized server or VM at a certain point in time, is supported by agentless backup methods. The ability to recover the snapshot enables programs to continue running without data loss, ensuring important application consistency for business continuity.
• Storage network backup: A LAN-free backup setup performs backup and recovery through the storage network rather than the LAN.

Agentless VMware Backup: If the Virtual Machine is on a VMFS Datastore, only the used blocks are backed up during the full backup. Using VMware’s CBT functionality, the incrementals will back up only the modified blocks. If the Virtual Machine is on an NFS Datastore, the used and unused blocks are backed up during the entire backup. However, using VMware’s CBT function, incrementals will back up only the modified blocks.
