What is an AWS Elastic Transcoder?

Amazon Elastic Transcoder enables in the conversion of large, high-quality digital media files into formats that users can view on mobile devices, tablets, web browsers, and connected televisions. It is a RESTful web service that uses HTTPS, and the message format is JavaScript Object Notation (JSON). Elastic Transcoder provides the management console and API, both providing same functionalities.

Elastic Transcoder consist of four parts: Jobs, Pipelines, Presets, and Notifications. Let’s see each part in detail.

Jobs

Jobs are in charge of transcoding. Each job converts a single file into up to 30 different formats. For instance, if we want to convert a media file into six different formats, we can do so by creating a single job.

When we create a job, we specify the name of the file to be transcoded, the names we want Elastic Transcoder to assign to the transcoded files, and a number of other options.

Pipelines

Pipelines serve as queues for transcoding jobs. We define which pipeline a job should be put to when we create it. Elastic Transcoder begins processing the jobs in the pipeline in the order that they were added. When we configure a job to transcode into multiple formats, Elastic Transcoder creates files for each format in the order that we specify the formats in the job.

When we create a new job in a pipeline that already has jobs, Elastic Transcoder queues the new job and begins processing it as soon as resources are available for that pipeline. If the pipeline has already exhausted all of its resources, Elastic Transcoder begins processing the next job in the pipeline when one of the jobs it is currently processing is completed.

Presets

Templates that include the major part of the settings for converting media files from one format to another. Elastic Transcoder comes with some default presets for popular formats. We can also create custom presets for formats that are not included in the default presets. When we create a job, we specify the preset.

Notifications

When we create a pipeline, we configure notifications. It can optionally configure Elastic Transcoder and Amazon Simple Notification Service to keep us up to date on the status of a job, such as when Elastic Transcoder begins processing the job, when Elastic Transcoder finishes processing the job, and whether Elastic Transcoder encounters warning or error conditions during processing.

AWS Elastic Transcoder: Working

When we upload a video file to an S3 bucket, a Lambda function is called after finishing the uploading process. Elastic Transcoder will then be invoked by the Lambda function. Elastic Transcoder converts the video file into various formats so that it can be viewed on different devices such as Smartphones, iphones, or laptop. It stores the transcoded files in an S3 bucket once the transcoding is complete.
