How to set up DigitalOcean Windows Droplet
If you are looking for a guide to help you create a DigitalOcean Windows Droplet, you are in the right place. Our Support Team has put together this tutorial to help you out.
In fact, although DigitialOcean does not offer native support for Windows Server OS on Droplets, it is still possible to go ahead with the plan, It involves creating a custom Windows ISO image and creating a Droplet via this image. Furthermore, we had to create a support ticket for the droplet in order to boot into the recovery ISO earlier. However, we can do this via the DigitalOcean client area currently. The entire process involves the following steps:
- Boot from recovery ISO
- Get console access
- Install Microsoft Windows
- Confirm the installation
- Log into Microsoft Windows
- Connect to the internet
Boot from recovery ISO
- Once we create the DigitalOcean Windows Droplet, we have to head to the left side menu and click Recover.
- Then, click Boot from Recovery ISO on the Recovery panel. This results in the following confirmation message:
Boot Device updated
- Finally, turn off the droplet and turn it back on. This will cause the droplet to turn on in recovery mode.
Get console access
- Click Access on the left side.
- This causes a new window to open up. In case the window is black without any text, select the window and press any key to open the menu.
- Then, choose 6 to choose Interactive Shell from the 6 options and press Enter to run the command.
Install Microsoft Windows
- First, run the wget command to retrieve the file for installation.
- After the installation, the cursor will start blinking to the right of bash-4.2# at the bottom of the console text.
- Once we get confirmation, switch back to Boot from Hard Drive and turn the droplet off and back on.
Confirm the installation
The next step in the DigitalOcean Windows Droplet process involves clicking the Console button or via Access from the left menu. Then we will see the Microsoft Windows Start screen or login screen.
Log into Microsoft Windows
At this point in time, we can log in via the login form. We can find the login form depending on the version of the Windows server we install on the DigitalOcean Windows Droplet.
Connect to the internet
After logging in to Windows, it is time to set up internet access. This involves manually configuring the assigned IP addresses including the public IP address, the gateway, subnet mask, and DNS servers.
After the above steps, we will be able to connect directly via Windows Remote Desktop.
After the setting up DigitalOcean Windows Droplet, our Support Techs recommend the following tips:
- Activate Microsoft Windows with a valid license key.
- Change to a more secure password for the Administrator account.
- Download and install the latest updates and missing Windows drivers.
