Configuring Email Routing with MX Records in cPanel

MX record is short for Mail Exchanger record. It is a key part of the Domain Name System (DNS) that mentions the mail server accepting email messages on behalf of a domain.

It tells the world which mail server is responsible for receiving email messages for our domain. We may not need to adjust MX records if our web hosting and email services are set to their default configurations.

However, updating MX records is essential if we want to use a different email service or retain the current email provider after moving the website.

Here are some of the ways we can manage MX records in cPanel:

  • Add an MX record entry in cPanel
  • Edit an MX entry in cPanel
  • Delete an MX record entry in cPanel
  • Configure email routing for the domains in cPanel

Add an MX Record in cPanel

  1. First, log in to cPanel.
  2. Then, go to the Domains section in cPanel.
  3. Now, click Zone Editor. Depending on our cPanel theme, this may be located on the Tools page or directly in the Domains section.
  4. Next, find the domain for which we want to add an MX record.
  5. Then, click the MX Record option next to it.
  6. In the “Add an MX Record” dialog box, enter the following:
    • Priority: A number indicating the priority of the mail server. Lower numbers have higher priority, with 0 being the highest.
    • Destination: The fully-qualified domain name of the mail server. IP addresses are not allowed here.
  7. Finally, click Add an MX Record to save the entry.

Edit an MX Record in cPanel

  1. First, log in to cPanel.
  2. Then, go to the Domains section in cPanel.
  3. Now, click Zone Editor.
  4. Next, locate the domain we want to modify and click Manage.
  5. Then, filter the list to show only MX records by clicking MX next to Filter.
  6. Now, find the specific MX record entry we want to edit and click Edit.
  7. Next, update the Priority and Destination fields.
  8. Finally, click Save Record to apply the changes.

Delete an MX Record in cPanel

  • First, log in to cPanel.
  • Then, go to the Domains section in cPanel.
  • Now, click Zone Editor.
  • Next, locate the domain we want to delete and click Manage.
  • Then, filter the list to show only MX records by clicking MX next to Filter.
  • Now, find the specific MX record entry we want to delete and click Delete.
  • Then, confirm the deletion by clicking Continue.

Managing email routing is also important when using third-party email services:

  1. Access Email Routing:

Log in to the cPanel account, go to the Email section, and select Email Routing.

  2. Set Email Routing:

By default, cPanel routes emails locally to the mail server on the hosting account.

To use a third-party email service, we have to switch the setting from Local to Remote. Then, click Change to save and apply the new setting.

Managing MX records in cPanel is a vital task to make sure our emails are properly directed.

With the above steps, we can easily add, edit, or delete MX records and configure email routing to suit our needs.
