SQL Server Enable CLR

Common Language Runtime/CLR, a part of Microsoft’s .NET Framework is a programming that manages the execution of programs written in any of several supported languages, allowing them to share common object-oriented classes written in any of the languages.

For SQL Server users and application developers, CLR integration allows to write stored procedures, triggers, user-defined types, user-defined functions (scalar and table valued), and user-defined aggregate functions using any .NET Framework language, including Microsoft Visual Basic .NET and Microsoft Visual C#.

How To Enable CLR?

The ability to execute common language runtime (CLR) code is set to OFF by default in SQL Server. The CLR code can be enabled by using the sp_configure system stored procedure in SQL Server Management Studio.

  1. From the Windows desktop, select Start>>All Programs>>Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2/Microsoft SQL Server 2008>>SQL Server Management Studio.
  2. Follow the below steps in the Connect to Server dialog box.
    • Firstly, choose Database Engine from the Server Type list.
    • Then select the server name for the Service Manager database from the Server Name list.
    • Also, select Windows Authentication from the Authentication list. Then click Connect.
  3. Now click New Query in the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio toolbar.
  4. Then we have to type the below code in the SQLQuery pane.
    EXEC sp_configure 'clr enabled', 1;
    RECONFIGURE;
    GO
  5. Now we have to press F5 to run this code.
  6. Finally, confirm that the Configuration option ‘clr’ enabled is displayed in the Messages pane.

We can also disable the CLR on SQL server by setting the ‘clr enabled’ option in above code to 0.

Permissions Required To Enable CLR

To enable CLR integration, we must have ALTER SETTINGS server level permission, which is implicitly held by members of the sysadmin and serveradmin fixed server roles.
