How to use a custom domain with Linode object storage?

In this scenario, we are using www.sportsacademy.com as the example with the bucket in Virginia (us-east-1).

  1. To begin with, we have to create a bucket that is labeled as our FQDN. In this case, it is www.sportsacademy.com .
In case, our files are already in a bucket without this label, we have to create a new bucket with this label and then copy our files into it.

  2. Then, create a CNAME record for the site as seen here:

    www IN CNAME www.sportsacademy.com.website-us-east-1.linodeobjects.com

  3. Next, start the bucket as a website:

    s3cmd ws-create --ws-index=index.html --ws-error=404.html s3:// www.sportsacademy.com

  4. Now, head to the Access tab for the bucket and set the ACL to Public Read.
  5. Then, create a simple index.html file in the bucket’s main directory as seen below:

  6. At this point, make sure we can browse http://www.sportsacademy.com/index.html

In case we run into any trouble, we have to verify permissions to make sure that index.html has the Public Read ACL. Additionally, we have to check that our DNS records are resolving.

  7. Now, it is time to get a TLS/SSL certificate for www.sportsacademy.com. We can use Certbot for this purpose. This process involves adding the file to .well-known/acme-challenge/. Additionally, we have to make sure that the file and all the directories containing the file are publicly readable.

Before instructing Certbot to examine the file, we must confirm that we can access it from our browser. If not, you will need to create a new file with a different name and contents.

  8. Install the bucket’s certificate now by going to the SSL/TLS tab of the bucket in Cloud Manager.

After the above steps, we will be able to browse the site using HTTPS now.
