Change Outgoing Exim IP in cPanel

Exim often uses the server’s principal IPv4 address to transmit mail. Check that the reverse DNS (rDNS) entry of Exim’s outgoing IP address matches the DNS response of the server’s hostname to reduce the likelihood that spam filters would classify the mail as spam. There are two ways to change Exim’s outgoing mail IP address in cPanel.

In this article, we will see those two methods to change the outgoing IP of Exim in cPanel.

Method 1: Enable Automatic Change

  1. Firstly, login to WHM as a root user.
  2. Navigate to the Service Configuration.
  3. Then select Exim Configuration Manager.
  4. Also, select the Domains and IPs tab.
  5. Finally, enable Send mail by clicking the “ON” for Send mail from the account’s IP address.

When you choose this option, the Exim is automatically configured by cPanel & WHM, which also overrides any manual modifications made to the /etc/mailhelo and /etc/mailips files.

Method 2: Manual Change

  1. Firstly, login to WHM as root user.
  2. Navigate to the Service Configuration.
  3. Then select Exim Configuration Manager.
  4. Now enable the below settings in the Basic Editor section in order to customize the Exim configuration:
    • Reference /etc/mailhelo for outgoing SMTP HELO
    • Reference /etc/mailips for outgoing SMTP connections

Exim’s settings for the HELO command, which starts the communication between a mail server and a client, can be found in the /etc/mailhelo file and the /etc/mailips file controls the IP address from which each domain delivers email. We can use any text editor to create both files.

The system will overwrite any modifications we make to the /etc/mailhelo file if we disable the Reference /etc/mailhelo for outgoing SMTP HELO. Also, the system overwrites any modifications we make to the /etc/mailips file if we disable the Reference /etc/mailips for outgoing SMTP connections setting.
