Remote MySQL In DirectAdmin Server

An external hosts will be able to access the database only if we configure the settings accordingly. In this article, we will learn how to configure a remote MySQL server in the DirectAdmin server. To enable remote MySQL access:

  1. Firstly, log in to your DirectAdmin account.
  2. Under Account Manager section, select MySQL Management.
  3. Now a db list appear. Then select a database from the list to configure its remote access settings.
  4. A ‘View Database’ page will appear. Under the Access Hosts section, enter the IP address of the remote host.
  5. Finally, click the Add New button.

As an Access Host, the new host is added to the list. The users on the host can now login to the MySQL database remotely. We can also disable remote MySQL Access on a host when needed.

Setup A Remote MySQL Server In DirectAdmin From Backend

The following steps setup a remote MySQL server in DirectAdmin from backend:

  1. Firstly, SSH to the web server as root.
  2. To include the IP of the remote MySQL server as host, edit /usr/local/directadmin/conf/mysql.conf.
    user=da_admin

    host=xx.xx.xx.xx

    passwd=H&*(h@123

    // xx.xx.xx.xx is an IP address of the remote MySQL server

  3. Now SSH to the remote MySQL server and confirm MySQL is installed using the code:
    mysqld -V

    If not, then install it using the command:

    mkdir mysql

    cd mysql

    wget http://files.directadmin.com/services/all/mysql/64-bit/5.5.11/MySQL-shared-5.5.11-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm

    wget http://files.directadmin.com/services/all/mysql/64-bit/5.5.11/MySQL-devel-5.5.11-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm

    wget http://files.directadmin.com/services/all/mysql/64-bit/5.5.11/MySQL-client-5.5.11-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm

    wget http://files.directadmin.com/services/all/mysql/64-bit/5.5.11/MySQL-server-5.5.11-1.linux2.6.x86_64.rpm

    rpm -Uvh MySQL-*
  4. Then login to MySQL service in remote MySQL server using the command:
    mysql -uroot -p
  5. Now grant da_admin all access.
    GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO da_admin@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx IDENTIFIED BY 'H&*(h@123' WITH GRANT OPTION;

    FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

    quit

    //xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the allowed web-server to access to the remote MySQL server.

  6. In order to confirm if web-server can access to remote MySQL server, use the command:
    mysql -uda_admin -p --host=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
  7. Also, in DirectAdmin, check to see if the web-server can build and administer databases using MySQL Management.
  8. Make the following changes to give phpMyAdmin access to remote MySQL databases:
    /var/www/html/phpMyAdmin/config.inc.php

    Now modify the below line:

    $cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost';

    To:

    $cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'xx.xx.xx.xx';

We must notify DirectAdmin of the new IP address so that it can be given to their access hosts for new MySQL user databases.
