DNS Probe Finished NXDomain cPanel | Troubleshooting Methods

by | Dec 7, 2023

We’ll get the “DNS PROBE FINISHED NXDOMAIN” in cPanel when the domain doesn’t resolve to an IP address. Bobcares, as a part of our cPanel & WHM Support Services offers solutions to every query that comes our way.

Fixing the “DNS PROBE FINISHED NXDOMAIN” in cPanel

We see the error message “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN” when we browse the webpage. This shows that there is no IP address resolution for the domain (website). This error message appears when the PowerDNS is not set up properly during the set up of cPanel. The resolv.conf file refers to a local IP address, and PowerDNS does not function as a recursive (caching) nameserver.

In order to fix the issue, we can use any of the following methods:

Method 1:

i. Make sure that external nameservers, like Google’s, are specified in /etc/resolv.conf before confirming that PowerDNS is set up correctly.

ii. Reinstalling PowerDNS is possible if it is configured correctly:

Method 2: All of the IP addresses of the websites a client has previously visited using the same computer are stored in the DNS cache. The computer might not be able to locate the correct website, though, if any of the IP addresses in the DNS cache are out of current.

Method 3: Stopping firewall services is also another option. Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Firewall and Network Protection to disable the Windows Defender Firewall. Toggle off the firewall by clicking the Windows Defender button once we’re in the firewall menu.

To access the Firewall on a Mac OS machine, browse to System Preferences > View > Security > Firewall using the Apple menu. We can click the button to end the firewall service on the Firewall tab.

Method 4: The most simple solution is to clear the browser cache. This also works well in fixing the “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN” in cPanel.
