Juju Restart LXD | How-to Guide

LXD containers and Juju controllers are powerful tools. We can use them to manage and deploy applications on Linux systems. However, sometimes it may be necessary to restart these components. Our experts have your back in these scenarios.

Juju Restart LXD | How-to Guide

How to Restart LXD Containers

We can easily restart an individual LXD container with this command:

lxc restart container_name

Remember to replace container_name with the name of the LXD container we want to restart.

How to Restart Juju Controllers

In order to restart the Juju controller, we have to restart the Juju daemon or the machine hosting the Juju controller service.

Interestingly, this process varies according to the operating system and how Juju was installed.

For instance, if Juju is installed on an Ubuntu-based system via Snap, we can restart the Juju controller’s daemon as seen below:

sudo systemctl restart snap.juju.controller-controller_name.service

We have to replace controller_name with the name of the Juju controller.

Our experts would like to point out that we have to be careful while managing the Juju controller or LXD containers as it may impact the running applications and services. Hence, always have a proper backup in case things do not go according to plan

Now that we have restarted the Juju Controller, here are a few helpful commands:

  • juju dashboard:

It offers a real-time web dashboard of all the models managed by the controller.

  • juju status:

It gives us a view of a model, its applications, its units, and other resources.

  • juju deploy:

It deploys a new charm as applications within a model.

  • juju ssh

This command allows us to access a secure shell into any machine or unit within the model.

  • juju switch

It allows us to switch between models and controllers.

Furthermore, we can use the juju help <command> to get additional instructions on every command provided by Juju.
