LiteSpeed restarts multiple times a day still a headache. Let’s see the methods to solve the issue.

Bobcares, as part of our Server Management Service responds to all inquiries, large or small.

Let’s take a closer look at the possible reasons for the restart and how our experts address the issue.

LiteSpeed restarts multiple times a day

Apache restarts by default every two hours and once every 24 hours. This is expected and normal. However, we may think why at these intervals?. The answer is so simple. For a cPanel & WHM server, these are the standard log/statistics processing intervals.

Litespeed restarts multiple times a day

The Statistics Software Configuration of WebHost Manager is as follows;

  • Log Processing Frequency [ 24 ] hours
  • Bandwidth Processing Frequency [ 2 ] hours

In order to get the file handles for the new logs, Apache needs a restart. Else, bandwidth/stats will stop logging, resulting in the loss of the data.

If we enable Piped Logging, then the Apache will not restart at these intervals. If that is not the case, there will be a server issue that needs investigation. Piped Logging was experimental in earlier releases. However, it’s possible that this may eventually become the default considering its benefits.

Piped Logging has two objectives.

  • Remove the requirement for an Apache restart during the processing of stats/bandwidth logging.
  • Reduce the quantity of open file handles on a server.

There is also another situation in which Apache will restart. When a cPanel user makes a modification that involves modifying httpd.conf, Apache will restart. For instance, adding or removing domains. Also, Chkservd will attempt to restart services that are down. All other restarts will be manual.

Restart: Possible Reasons

Let’s look into the possible reasons for a LiteSpeed Restart multiple times and what are the methods provided by our Support Team to solve it.

    • The cPanel restarts the web server while rotating the logs. Here, if logs like access_log and domlogs hit their threshold, cPanel would restart Litespeed. We can fix it by disabling the logs.
    • If the customers using cpanel, we find the restart occurs with log file rotation. So we ask them to activate “Piped Log Configuration” in Apache.
    • If there is a cron task to restart the web server, please verify it. We can tell if it’s almost in fixed time by looking at the time stamp of the restart.
    • We can check the time stamp. Else, we force a reinstall.
