Let’s see the steps to enable UPnP in pfSense. As part of our pfSense Support Services, Bobcares provides answers to all of your questions.
Steps to Enable UPnP in pfSense
For automated NAT port mapping, two protocols are used: UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) and NAT-PMP. This means that devices can automatically set port-forwarding rules on a router or firewall. UPnP is widely used in Microsoft systems. And NAT-PMP is commonly used on Apple computers. Let’s look into the enabling steps:
1. Initially, log into pfSense with the credentials.
2. Then, browse to Services.
3. Select UPnP & NAT-PMP.
4. Check Enable UPnP & NAT-PMP.
5. Check Allow UPnP Port Mapping, Allow NAT-PMP Port Mapping, or both.
6. Select the Interface(s) which will be applied (Ctrl + click to select multiple interfaces).
7. Lastly, save the changes.
Enabling UPnP and NAT-PMP enables devices on the network to set up the router for better connectivity. This is especially useful for game consoles like Xbox, video servers, and torrent clients.
To step up the setup from basic to advanced for UPnP & NAT-PMP, we must follow these steps:
1. Enable UPnP & NAT-PMP and tick the boxes for allowing port mapping for both UPnP and NAT-PMP.
2. Choose the external interface (usually WAN).
3. Select the interfaces where UPnP/NAT-PMP clients exist.
4 Tick the box for “Default Deny” to automatically deny access to UPnP & NAT-PMP by default.
This “Default Deny” feature means we’ll need to specify which devices can use UPnP & NAT-PMP. Here’s how:
5. Use an Access Control List (ACL) to list allowed devices.
6. Specify “allow” or “deny”.
7. Define the external port or port range.
8. Specify the single IP address or IP range.
9. Define the internal port or port range.
