Reset Master User Password for Amazon RDS DB Instance

by | Aug 12, 2021

We can Reset Master User Password for the Amazon RDS DB Instance using the Amazon RDS console.

Here, at Bobcares, we assist our customers with several AWS queries as part of our AWS Support Services.

Today, let us see how our Support Techs perform this query.

Reset Master User Password for Amazon RDS DB Instance

When it comes to clustered systems, such as Amazon Aurora, we reset the password for an RDS DB instance in the cluster with a Writer or Reader role.

Then, we select Apply Immediately.

Since the password change is asynchronous, it applies as soon as possible. Hence the RDS DB instance does not require a restart.

Moving ahead, let us see how to perform this from the Amazon RDS console.

To avoid errors while we run the AWS Command Line Interface commands we make sure to have the most recent AWS CLI version.

To modify the master user password, our Support Techs recommend the steps below:

  1. Initially, we open the Amazon RDS console.
  2. Then we select Databases.
  3. After that, we go to the RDS DB instance and then choose Modify.
In case we use Aurora, we expand the cluster and select the instance to modify. Then, we select Modify.
  4. Eventually, we enter the master user password we want to use in the New Master Password field.
Since the password change is asynchronous, it ignores the Apply Immediately setting.
  5. Finally, we select Continue >> Modify DB Instance.

Now, the Status field for the RDS DB instance on the RDS dashboard changes to resetting-master-credentials.

Once the modification is complete, the Status column will change to Available.

In addition, we can modify an RDS DB instance using the Amazon RDS API or the AWS CLI.
