Access Proxmox VM with SPICE

Did you know that the SPICE protocol offers a seamless and immersive remote desktop experience? Short for Simple Protocol for Independent Computing Environments, SPICE is an open-source application that enables easy access to virtual machines.

Access Proxmox VM with SPICE

Today, we are going to take a look at how to use SPICE in the Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE).

Enabling SPICE Support

Before we begin, we need a SPICE client, like Virt-viewer, and SPICE drivers (VirtIO, QXL Graphic card drivers) in our virtual machine. Fortunately, most Linux distributions released after 2011 come with SPICE drivers as part of the Xorg package.

We can easily install Virt-viewer in the Proxmox VE/Debian host system as seen here:

$ sudo apt install virt-viewer

Once Virt-viewer is in place, we can access the Proxmox VE Web UI:

  1. First, log in to the Proxmox Web UI.
  2. Then, head to the desired virtual machine and enter the “Hardware” section.
  3. After that, double-click “Display” and set the Graphic card value to SPICE.
  4. Now, we can opt to adjust memory values for high-resolution SPICE usage or not.
  5. Finally, save the changes.

Proxmox Configuration

For a seamless experience, we have to turn off our VM and make the following virtual hardware changes through the Proxmox VE web portal:

  1. To begin with, head to Hardware in our VM and click Display.
  2. Then, choose “Spice” from the dropdown menu and allocate 32 MB of video memory.
  3. Now, click OK to confirm.

Starting the SPICE Session

Once configured, start your VM and follow these steps:

  1. First, click Spice under Console to start the remote session.
  2. Then, download the connection config file that pops up.
  3. Next, open the file with Remote Viewer.

Additional Optimizations to Enhance Performance

  • Adding Audio Devices:
    1. Head to Hardware under Virtual machine.
    2. Then, click “Add” and choose “Audio device.”
    3. Now, select the desired Audio device type and click Add.
  • Adding USB Devices:
    1. Head to the “Hardware” section and click “Add”.
    2. Then, select “USB Device” and choose “Spice Port” as the USB device type and click Add.
  • Accessing Proxmox Virtual Machine with SPICE:
    1. First, click the “Start” button to launch the VM.
    2. Then, select SPICE from the dropdown box under “Console”.
    3. Next, download the connection config file and open it with Remote Viewer.
