How to add a second datacenter to vSphere in VMware?

The VE for VMware’s cloud computing is the vSphere. It includes improved versions of vCenter Configuration Manager and vCenter Application Discovery Manager, as well as the ability for vMotion to move several virtual machines simultaneously from one host server to another.

A different vCenter server manages the secondary data center. We can set up the below during the secondary data center:

  • Generated from an OVA file imported from the primary data center, VMware Identity Manager appliances are located in the secondary data center.
  • Secondary data center’s load balancer.
  • Database setup.
  • Between the primary and secondary data centers, use a load balancer or DNS entry.
  • Duplicate Horizon View and Citrix-based resources and entitlements.

Pre-requisites: Meet the requirements for VMware Identity Manager deployment in a secondary data center, VMware Identity Manager certificate should include the FQDN of the load balancer from the primary data center as well as the FQDN of the load balancer from the secondary data center, and within a cluster and between clusters in data centers, ports 443 and 8443 must be open within all VMware Identity Manager instances.

Steps to add a second datacenter to vSphere in VMware

1. We’ve to set up the primary data center for Elasticsearch replication across clusters before setting up a secondary data center.

2. We must verify that the cluster in the main data center is configured properly. Check the clustering of the included components Elasticsearch and Ehcache as well.

3. The OVA file of the original VMware Identity Manager appliance in the primary data center is exported and used to install appliances in the secondary data center in order to build up a VMware Identity Manager cluster there.

4. Set up the nodes for Elasticsearch replication after we create nodes in the secondary data center by using the OVA file exported from the primary data center.

5. Configure the Cluster ID for the secondary data center and confirm that the cluster is set up correctly once we create the nodes.

6. We have to configure the runtime-config.properties file to set the appliances for read-only access.

7. To make the necessary resources accessible from any data center, set the failover order of resources in both the primary and secondary data centers.

8. We’ve to remove the cache in the secondary data center in order to make it failover prepared.

9. Database replication is set for VMware Identity Manager so that data is consistent between database servers within the primary data center and while moving to the secondary data center.
