Allow Ping Digitalocean Droplet: How to?

by | May 5, 2023

Let us learn how to allow ping Digitalocean droplet with the support of our DigitalOcean support services at Bobcares.

Ping in DigitalOcean droplet

Allow Ping Digitalocean Droplet

When we build a Droplet on DigitalOcean, we provide it a public IP address so that it may connect with the internet. We can use the Ping protocol to see if the Droplet is reachable from the internet.

Ping is a networking function that transmits a data packet from a computer or another device. It transmits data to the destination device’s IP address.

When the destination device responds to the packet, the Ping utility displays the response time and other connection information.

For security concerns, DigitalOcean by default restricts Ping queries to the Droplet. However, we can allow Ping requests to the Droplet by configuring the firewall rules.

How to Allow Ping Digitalocean Droplet?

  1. Firstly, log in to the DigitalOcean account and go to the Droplet to which we wish to enable Ping requests.
  2. Select the “Networking” tab, followed by the “Firewalls” tab.
    Select the “Create Firewall” option.

  3. After that, enter a name for the firewall, such as “Allow Ping,” and optionally add a description.
  4. Under “Inbound Rules,” select the “Add Rule” option.
  5. “ICMP” should be selected from the “Protocol” drop-down option.
  6. After that, leave the “Port Range” column blank, and choose “All IPv4” and “All IPv6” as the “Source.”
  7. Finally, to save the modifications, click the “Create Firewall” button.

We should be able to Ping the DigitalOcean Droplet from another device once we’ve setup the firewall to allow ICMP traffic.

Allowing Ping queries may expose the Droplet to possible security threats. Therefore use this functionality strictly to verify connectivity or solve network issues.
