Ceph Block Storage Replication: Setup Guide

by | Mar 28, 2023

Let us learn more about the feature ceph block storage replication. With the support of our Server management support services at Bobcares we will give you complete note on the feature.

What is ceph block storage replication?

Ceph Block Storage Replication

Ceph Block Storage Replication is a functionality that lets users duplicate data in Ceph at the block level. It ensures high availability and fault tolerance by replicating data across many storage nodes.

Block storage replication is the act of replicating data from one storage node to another in order to ensure that a redundant duplicate of the data is always accessible. A user can  set up the block storage replication in Ceph through the construction of  the replication pools.

The number of copies to create for each item in the pool; when creating a replication pool. The set up porcess, done different OSD’s to ensure high availability and fault tolerance.

How to setup the ceph block storage replication?

The following are the general steps to enable Ceph block storage replication:

  • Set replication settings. Before constructing a replicated pool, the user must specify the Ceph cluster’s replication parameters. Setting the replication factor, which is the number of clones that should be made for each item, is part of this.
  • Create a replicated pool. After configuring the replication parameters, the user can build a replicated pool in Ceph. The user can define the number of placement groups (PGs) and the replication factor when building a pool. The PGs control the distrinution of data throughout the cluster’s OSDs.
  • Construct a volume in the replicated pool. A user can build a volume in the pool after generating a replicated pool. While creating a volume, the user specifies the volume size, the pool to create the volume in which the volume, and the replication factor.
  • Write data to the volume. After creating the volume, a user can write data to it. Based on the replication factor chosen for the volume, the data  will automatically copy to several OSDs in the cluster.
  • When a user access data from a replicated volume, Ceph obtains it from one of the available copies. If one of the copies is unavailable, Ceph gets the data from another replica.

Conclusion

To sum everything up, Ceph Block Storage Replication is a functionality that allows users to duplicate data in Ceph at the block level.

To enable high availability and fault tolerance, replicated pools are created, which produce multiple copies of data across different storage nodes.
