Let’s look into some of the Cloudflare Argo Tunnel Limitations in this article. Bobcares, as a part of our Server Management Service offers solutions to every query that comes our way.

Cloudflare Argo Tunnel Limitations

Cloudflare Argo Tunnel is a useful tool for connecting the on-premises infrastructure to the Cloudflare network. However, there are several drawbacks to be aware of:

1. The Cloudflare Argo Tunnel handles inbound connections like HTTP(S) traffic for web apps. So, it does not support outbound direct connections from the origin server to external resources. This means that Argo Tunnel will not secure services on the origin server that require outbound connections to external APIs or databases.

2. Argo Tunnel handles simply HTTP/HTTPS traffic. As a result, it may not be good for tunneling TCP or UDP traffic. We need additional modifications and workarounds if we require tunneling of non-HTTP protocols.

3. While Argo Tunnel is excellent for online apps, it may not be correct for all apps or services. So, some protocols and apps may be incompatible with Argo Tunnel or may not fully use its features.

4. Each Argo Tunnel connects to a single origin server. If we have several origin servers or a load-balanced setup, individual Argo Tunnels must be created for each origin server.

5. When compared to direct connections, Argo Tunnel routes traffic through Cloudflare’s global network of data centers, which can impose significant latency. While Cloudflare’s network is built for maximum performance, some delays may occur depending on the user’s location and the closest Cloudflare data center.

6. To avoid abuse or overuse of the service, Cloudflare may set rate limits on Argo Tunnel connections. It’s critical to understand these rate constraints, especially if the application suffers spikes in traffic.

7. Cloudflare’s SSL certificate infrastructure is used by Argo Tunnel to offer HTTPS encryption between the user’s browser and Cloudflare’s edge servers. The certificate issued by the origin server, on the other hand, may not match the domain used by the end-user to access the application. In some cases, this can result in certificate warnings.
