We can easily create and maintain email accounts with Cloudflare Email Routing without having to keep an eye on additional mailboxes. With Cloudflare Email Routing, we can now control the “who receives which email” aspect of email transmission.

An email consists of the envelope, the header, and its body. The envelope, a part of the SMTP transport protocol, informs the servers about the origin and destination of the email. In this article, we will see Email Routing through SMTP.

Steps To Set Up Cloudflare Email Routing Using SMTP

• Enter the Cloudflare dashboard and choose the domain and account.
• Select Get started under Email > Email Routing to continue.
• Enter the specific email address we want to use in the Custom address.
• Put the complete email address where we want to send the emails in the Destination address.
• Choose Create and keep going.
• The email address entered in the Destination address area will get a verification email from Cloudflare. Before continuing, we must confirm your email address.
• To activate Email Routing, choose the option Verify email address > Go to Email Routing in the Cloudflare verification email.
• The Destination address should now appear under Status as Verified. Choose Continue.
• Finally, choose Add records and finish. For Email Routing to function, Cloudflare must add the relevant MX and TXT records to DNS records. This automatic step is required when we configure Email Routing for the first time. It’s for ensuring the zone is setup up with the correct records.

In order for the service to function, the proper MX records must be in the DNS settings while enabling Email Routing. These MX records are editable at any moment. However, based on how we set them up, Email Routing could also stop functioning.

No other email services may be active in the domain we are configuring while Email Routing is configured and operational. Cloudflare will also ask us if we want to delete any existing MX records that are already set up in DNS if there are any. Email Routing won’t be available if we don’t remove the current MX records.
