Connection error could not negotiate SSL VMware | Resolved

Today, we are going to take a look at how to check and troubleshoot SSL certificate problems.

Connection error: Could not negotiate SSL.

  • To begin with, we have to ensure the SSL certificate is valid. If not, we have to download the new SSL certificate from our certificate authority. Then, we have to configure our server or tool to use it. This involves updating our server’s settings to point to the new certificate file.
  • In some cases, we may still face errors when connecting from a local network. This happens because the VMware Remote Console tries to use a local IP for the connection. Local IPs will not match the domain name on our SSL certificate, leading to problems.

We can fix this by adding an entry in our local machine’s hostname resolver. We have to add a line that maps the local IP to the domain name of the server, like this:

    <local ip> <domain name of server>

  • If we have installed certificates in VMware Cloud Director but still run into errors on the Web Console, we may have to change the port number on the Console Proxy Public URL to 8443 instead of the default 443. Here is how to do that :
    1. Head to ‘Administration.’
    2. Then, choose ‘Public Addresses’ and click ‘Console Proxy.’
    3. Now, change the port to 8443.

With the above tips, we can easily resolve the connection error.
