At Bobcares, we often get requests to enable ssh access in DirectAdmin as part of our Server Management Services.

DirectAdmin ssh access – How it possible?

Let’s see how our Support Engineers enable the ssh access in DirectAdmin for the customers.

To enable ssh access for a user.

1.  First we login to DirectAdmin with an administrator account.

2. Then after we Search for the user that would like to make changes to.

3. After getting this window, we click on the Modify user option.

4. Then we Tick SSH Access option.

5. At last, we click on the SAVE button.

Now the user account is able to access the webserver via SSH access.

DirectAdmin enable ssh access from the command line.

We can also grant SSH access and privileges to an account via your web server’s SSH terminal.

To do this, we use the below commands.

useradd [username]
passwd [username]

How we fix common errors in DirectAdmin ssh access.

We see many customers face problems when trying to create a user with SSH in DirectAdmin servers.

Recently, one of our customers approached us with an ssh error. He tried to create a new user with SSH via server terminal and DirectAdmin panel but it returns with Access Denied error.

To fix this error we first check the ssh configuration file : /etc/ssh/sshd_config

1. We open the ssh conf file using the below command.

 vi  /etc/ssh/sshd_config

At the very bottom is where the allowed users are stored. root and admin should already be there.
Then after we try to put this under those:

AllowUsers <username>

2. After this, we save the conf file and restart the SSH service.

service ssh restart

Then we able to login with that user successfully.

This fixes the error for the customers.
