How to enable SNMP in pfSense?

We can remotely monitor many parts of the pfSense software by using the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) daemon. It allows us to monitor many system metrics, including CPU, memory, and disk consumption, as well as network traffic, network flows, and PF queues.

enable snmp pfsense

Bsnmpd is the name of the SNMP daemon that pfSense employs. It only includes the most fundamental management information bases (MIBs) by default. However, by including loadable modules, we can increase the way it works. In addition to monitoring, bsnmpd has the ability to notify an SNMP server when specific events take place via alerts known as traps. The modules we have loaded determine what kinds of events set off these traps.

Steps Required

1. Start a web browser, type in the pfSense firewall’s IP address, and then go to the web interface.

2. Now, the online interface for PfSense will appear. Enter the login details for Pfsense Default Password on the prompt screen.

3. Following a successful login, the Pfsense Dashboard will appear.

4. Go to the Services menu in Pfsense and choose SNMP. Select SNMP under Services.

5. Verify that the SNMP Daemon and associated controls are enabled.

6. Ensure that 161 is the polling port. Enter the preferred community string here.

7. Verify that every module is chosen in the SNMP module settings.

8. Choose the ALL option on the Interface binding configuration.

9. To complete the setup, click the Save button.

10. With success, the Pfsense SNMP service has been enabled. It appears that we have successfully set up the Pfsense SNMP service.

11. Verify that every box for the SNMP modules is checked.

12. To bind the SNMP daemon, choose the interface. This is usually the name of the pfSense LAN interface.

13. Press Save.
