ERPNext Virtual Machine | Set-up Guide

Deploying and managing ERPNext is a lot easier than ever, thanks to Virtual Machines. Today, we are going to take a look at the benefits of using ERPNext VMs as well as step-by-step instructions to set up and configure our virtual environment.

  2. Benefits of Using ERPNext VMs
  3. Setting Up ERPNext with the Virtual Machine

What is an ERPNext Virtual Machine?

An ERPNext virtual machine can be described as a pre-configured, self-contained virtual environment that helps avoid the complications of installing and configuring ERPNext.

ERPNext Virtual Machine

This setup includes an OS, the ERPNext application, a web server, a database, and other key components. The goal is to simplify the deployment and maintenance process for users.

Benefits of Using ERPNext Virtual Machines

Now, let’s take a quick look at some of the benefits of using ERPNext VMs:

  • Setting up ERPNext is easy and lets users import or run the pre-configured VM.
  • VMs can run on different host platforms, allowing easy migration of the ERPNext installation between different servers or computers.
  • The virtual environment is isolated from the host system. This reduces the risk of conflicts with other software or applications.
  • ERPNext VMs make sure system configurations are uniform across different environments.

Setting Up ERPNext with the Virtual Machine

The ERPNext VM is configured with 1 CPU core, 1.5GB RAM, and 30GB disk space. Any computer since 2010 with at least 2GB RAM should be able to run it. Although the VM file download is 5GB, it extracts to a larger size, so remember it utilizes more disk space as we build and use it.

Before we begin the setup process, do the following:

  1. Download and install virtualization software like VirtualBox.
  2. Download the ERPNext VM.

Now, go ahead with these steps:

  1. To begin with, connect to the VM via SSH. Port 22 is already forwarded to host port 2222.
  2. Then, choose a Frappe version and follow the provided commands to start the bench. This step makes sure we are working with the desired ERPNext version.
  3. Now, use the bench to create a new site. We have to specify the desired name and configurations. Furthermore, set up port number 80 for our site, and configure the VM for production use.
  4. At this point, we can restore the site from our backup file. Copy the encryption key from your backup into the site_config.json file.
  5. Then, enable the scheduler to ensure tasks like backups and email sending are executed.
